Do you want to be a successful self-published author?

Filled under:

Here are the 10 simple things you can do to help you succeed as you travel down the self-publishing road:

1.) Read and Learn – The publishing industry is not just there to merely fulfill your dreams, it is a business that needs strategies in order for you to compete with the other authors out there. Therefore you need to read, read, and read more articles and news updates about the latest happenings in the world of self-publishing. There’s no better way to success than being prepared for things to come.

2.) Global Competition – As mentioned above, you will have a lot of competitors along this journey. Some may be new like you while others may be famous veterans, like Guy Kawasaki or E.L. James. So it will definitely help to study a little about your competitors and how their books are currently doing in the market.

3.) Write What Interests People РOf course, this is one of the most important things you need to do. It would be a waste of time for you and your readers if you write off-topic books and other clich̩ stories. It will help to have your niche or target readers in mind as early as possible.

4.) Marketing, Marketing, Marketing – From the very moment you start writing your manuscript, think about your marketing strategies. Think how you want to reach out to your target readers. Will you build your own website? Should you create a blog from famous blog hosting sites? Or will you maintain a following through various social media networks?

5.) Hire Professional Services – We know that self-publishing means you are the publisher and all it entails but it doesn’t mean you have to do it all ALONE. Hire professional services when it comes to copy editing, proofreading, and designing your book cover. These 3 areas are critical and making a slight mistake could make or break your book.

6.) Catchy Titles Win – Your title should be as clear and as short as possible. Readers sometimes buy books based on their titles. If they find the title interesting, then it’s a good start to making book sales.

Three Self-Publishing Issues You Need To Avoid

Filled under:

self publishing
If you have the passion of being a writer and wants to impart your visions and imaginations to the world, then keeping yourself off from the following common mistakes is highly recommended:

  1. Goals and Milestones – It is important to have a clear vision of what do you want to achieve with your book. Oftentimes, having "money" as the center of a goal in publishing a book is a bad idea as authors tend to publish the book without checking thoroughly if the story and the quality of the book itself is good and have provided value to the readers. Although, having "money" as one of the goals is not at all a bad idea as long as the authors will still provide an informative and valuable literary piece.
  2. Ask Help. Hire People – No man is an island – this is true when you are self publishing as you need all the help you can get. You can't do all the tasks needed in self publishing by yourself. Hire people if possible especially when it comes to copy editing and book cover designer.
  3. Social Media Marketing – While social media is still free, you can actually abuse its power by creating and participating in the top social networking sites. Spread the news about your book and about yourself. Participate in any author blog forums, communicate, and engage with other authors.
